Safer boating

We want everyone to stay safe on the water. Before you head out, make sure you:

  • Wear a lifejacket.
  • Carry at least 2 waterproof means of communication.
  • Check and understand the marine weather forecast.

These simple steps can make a big difference in an emergency.

Pre-departure checklist

  • Check the marine forecast
  • Take 2 waterproof ways to call for help
  • Everyone wears a lifejackets - including the skipper
  • Don't drink alcohol - alcohol and water don't mix
  • Be a responsible skipper - know the rules, conditions and bylaws.
Marine VHF radio channels
  • Gisborne Coastguard: Channels 3 and 5
  • Maritime Radio (working channels): 67, 68, 69, 71
  • Distress and emergency: Channel 16

What you should know

Before heading out on the water, make sure you're familiar with the Tairāwhiti Navigation Safety Bylaw, including the changes

Tairāwhiti Navigation Safety Bylaw 2024

The bylaw includes requirements for:

Lifejackets - must be worn on any vessel under 6m in length while underway. For information on types of lifejackets visit Maritime NZ website

Boat names or numbers - all vessels over 4m must display a name or number.

Communication equipment - vessels must carry at least 2 operational means of communication.

Open water swimming - anyone swimming more than 200m from shore must either tow a brightly coloured safety float or swim buoy,  must wear a brightly coloured swim cap, or be accompanied by a support vessel.
