From Monday 28 September, the HB Williams Memorial Library is trialling a new way for people to access its services, with the Bright Street doors becoming the main entrance for visitors.
The 6-month trial aims to make it easier for people to find services when they arrive and support the safety of staff and visitors.
“We want people to feel welcome and know exactly where to go when they arrive,” says Cultural Activities Manager Pene Walsh.
“Entry from Bright Street gives visitors a clearer line of sight to our team and service desk. It supports the safety of our staff and visitors, and this trial lets us test that properly before making any long-term decisions.”
As part of the trial, the Peel Street doors will be closed to public entry but will remain available as an emergency exit.
The existing book return slot will continue to operate and a new mural will help guide visitors to the "Bright Side" of the library.
People who would normally enter via Peel Street can easily access the library through Treble Court.
All library services will continue as usual during the trial.
“This is about making things easier and safer for as many people as possible,” says Ms Walsh.
“It’s a trial, and we’ll review it carefully using feedback and data before deciding what happens next.”
The trial will run until 30 March 2027.
Visitors are encouraged to share feedback throughout the trial via the library website or by using the feedback box at the main service desk.
